Five separate checks

Online Casino Verification and KYC in Canada

Account identity and age, wagering location, deposit authorization, withdrawal ownership and additional review are separate stages. An earlier check does not remove later payment controls.

Updated Ontario: 19+Alberta: 18+
The key distinction
Account verification comes first

Required registration information is validated before account creation. A withdrawal can still receive a separate ownership or risk review.

Verification sequence

What Gets Checked, and When

The outcome of one stage does not automatically satisfy the next one.

01
Before the account is created

Account identity and age

The player's registration information, identity and legal age are validated before account creation.

The account is created only after the required information passes validation.

02
Before wagering and again during play

Wagering location

The casino verifies that the player is physically inside the regulated province when placing wagers.

Wagering is blocked when location cannot be verified.

03
When a deposit is submitted

Deposit authorization

The deposit and its payment authorization are verified before money is credited to the player account.

An unauthorized or unverified deposit is not accepted.

04
When a withdrawal is requested

Withdrawal ownership

The casino verifies that the requester owns the player account and that the payout destination is legally held by the same player.

The withdrawal is released as soon as practicable after the required checks are complete.

05
When account or transaction risk calls for more information

Risk-based additional review

Additional identity or source-of-funds information can be required when risk-based controls call for it.

The casino applies the additional control required by its risk policy before deciding whether the transaction can proceed.

Provincial rules

Ontario and Alberta Share the Stages, Not Every Detail

Wagering location is different from residence. Ontario residence is not required. Alberta requires a validated physical address at registration and physical presence in Alberta to wager. A separate Alberta residency requirement remains unknown.

Ontario

19+
Account creation
Registration information must be complete, accurate and validated before the account is created.
Residence and access
Ontario residence is not required to register, access or manage an account. A player can deposit and withdraw while outside Ontario, but must be physically in Ontario to wager.
Wagering
Physical location must be verified for wagering, and play is blocked when Ontario location cannot be verified. Location checks repeat at reasonable intervals.
Payment ownership
Deposits require authorization and verification. A withdrawal is released after the requester is verified as the account holder and the destination account is confirmed as legally held by that player.

Alberta

18+
Account creation
Registration information must be complete, accurate and validated before the account is created.
Residence and access
A validated physical address is required at registration. Wagering requires physical presence in Alberta.
Wagering
Physical location must be verified for wagering, and play is blocked when Alberta location cannot be verified. Location checks repeat during play.
Payment ownership
Deposits require authorization and verification. A withdrawal is released after the requester is verified as the account holder and the destination account is confirmed as legally held by that player.
A provincial healthcare card is not accepted for Alberta account identification.
Documents and methods

There Is No Universal Upload Checklist

Identity must be verified, but the accepted route can be documentary or electronic. A later review can still request more information.

Permitted method

Government-issued photo ID

A valid, current and authentic government-issued photo ID is one permitted way to verify identity.

Permitted method

Canadian credit file

A qualifying Canadian credit file can verify identity without a player uploading a photo ID.

Permitted method

Two different reliable sources

Two different reliable sources can verify the required combinations of name, address, date of birth and financial account information.

Registration information

Current address information

Address information is required at registration. More than one permitted verification method can validate it, so a separate proof-of-address upload is not universal.

Required control

Payout account ownership

The withdrawal destination must be legally held by the player requesting the payout.

Only when required

Source-of-funds information

Source-of-funds information is requested when risk-based anti-money-laundering controls call for corroboration, not from every player at one fixed amount.

Not accepted

Alberta healthcare card

A provincial healthcare card is not accepted for Alberta account identification.

Ways identity can be verified

Government-issued photo ID

A valid, current and authentic government-issued photo ID can verify identity when its name and photo match the player and it carries a unique identifying number.

Canadian credit file

A Canadian credit file can verify identity when it has existed for at least three years and is based on more than one source.

Dual-process verification

Two different reliable sources can be combined to verify name and address, name and date of birth, or name and a financial account.

Selected federal checks

Selected Federal Identity Checks Have Different Triggers

These are selected federal casino identity checks, not the complete list. The casino-disbursement threshold uses 24-hour aggregation, and stated federal exceptions can apply. The amounts do not create one universal source-of-funds threshold for every player.

At least C$3,000

Receipt of funds

The receipt-of-funds threshold can require identity verification. Federal exceptions apply to some transactions.

At least C$10,000

Casino disbursement

The casino-disbursement threshold is subject to 24-hour aggregation and can require identity verification. Federal exceptions apply to some transactions.

Any amount

Suspicious transaction

Reasonable measures apply regardless of amount, but repeat identification is not required when the person is already verified and there is no doubt about the information. Verification is also excepted when it could reveal that a suspicious-transaction report is being filed.

Source-of-funds corroboration remains risk-based in both covered provinces. A request for extra records is an account or transaction control, not a finding that the player has done something wrong.
