Is It Safe to Play Online in Ontario?

Ontario's regulated framework sets the safeguards below. Private operators need an AGCO registration and an iGaming Ontario agreement; OLG.ca is government-conducted and AGCO-overseen. You must be 19+ to join.

Two gates for private operators

A private operator needs an AGCO internet-gaming registration and an executed iGaming Ontario agreement. OLG.ca is the government-conducted exception and remains under AGCO oversight.

Wagers require an Ontario location

Regulator-compliant location check (player must be physically in Ontario) confirms you're physically in Ontario before a wager. Account access outside the province can vary, but regulated Ontario wagering must be blocked.

Your money is ring-fenced

Registration requires certified, independently audited random number generators and player funds held in accounts segregated from the operator's own cash.

BetGuard self-exclusion

BetGuard (live since May 14, 2026) blocks existing and new accounts plus direct marketing across every regulated operator and OLG. Choose six months, one year, five years or a custom period; it cannot be shortened.

Account controls are required

Licensed sites must provide responsible-gambling controls. Ontario's shared framework includes spend limits, time limits, short-term breaks, self-exclusion.

Free help, around the clock

ConnexOntario: 1-866-531-2600, text CONNEX to 247247, connexontario.ca. Free, confidential support any time you need it. You must be 19+ to play.

Enforcement record

AGCO Regulatory Action History

22 licensed Ontario casinos in our data carry an AGCO enforcement record. The table has 26 brand-linked rows representing 16 distinct notices or events, each with the date, penalty and official source. A single operator-level notice can appear against more than one sister brand.

How to Verify an iGaming Ontario Licence

Use these four checks before depositing. They separate an Ontario-regulated casino from a brand licensed only somewhere else.

01

Check the iGO directory

Every legal private operator is listed in iGaming Ontario's public regulated-market directory. OLG.ca is the government-conducted exception and is overseen by the AGCO.

02

Match the operating entity

The brand should map to a registered operator, and sister brands often share one (partycasino and bwin both run under ElectraWorks Maple, for example). We verify the entity, not just the logo.

03

Confirm the geolocation check

A legal site runs a regulator-compliant geolocation check before it accepts a wager. A casino that lets you play from anywhere is not regulated for Ontario play.

04

Do not rely on global licence badges

A brand that is absent from the iGO directory should not be treated as regulated for Ontario play. A licence from another country does not replace the Ontario checks.

How Ontario Opened Its Market

The short version of how Ontario became the first regulated, competitive online casino market in Canada, and where it's headed.

2021

Ontario builds the framework

Ontario moves ahead with a competitive iGaming framework, with AGCO regulation and iGaming Ontario conducting and managing the market.

Apr 2022

iGaming Ontario launches

Ontario opens Canada's first competitive, regulated online casino market. Operators need an AGCO registration plus an executed iGO operating agreement.

May 2026

BetGuard self-exclusion

iGaming Ontario's province-wide BetGuard registry goes live, letting players self-exclude across every regulated operator and OLG.ca at once.

Outside Ontario? See Alberta's competitive market (opened July 13, 2026) or the national best online casinos in Canada.
